Sam Stephenson is a 2019 Guggenheim fellow in nonfiction whose most recent book is Gene Smiths Sink (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). He is currently at work on a book with musician Lucinda Williams, to be published next year by Crown. Two of his previous books, Dream Street (W.W. Norton) and The Jazz Loft Project (Alfred A. Knopf) will be published in new editions next year by University of Chicago Press. He is at work on a book about jazz pianist Bill Evans and his wife, Ellaine Schultz, for University of North Carolina Press.
